Chennai : Thailand’s Decha Kraisart and Chalermpol Polomai, no strangers to the MMST track at Sriperumbudur, qualified for the front row of the Supersport 600cc grid in the fourth round of the FIM Asia Racing Championship here Saturday.
Heavy rains in the afternoon forced abandonment of the second qualifying session after Kraisart clocked 1 minute, 44.821 seconds to take the pole position ahead of team-mate Polomai (1:45.212).
The Thai duo had won both the races between them last year when the FIM event was allotted to India for the first time.
Indonesian Dori Tata Pradita occupied the third spot (1:45.451) and Md.Zamri Baba of Malaysia was fourth (1:45.657).
In the Underbone (115cc) class, Rafid Topan Sucipto qualified for pole position, followed by Hadi Wijaya.
Kraisart said: “I really enjoy riding here and am very happy to be on pole position. I was pretty confident with the set-up we found yesterday and the bike felt really good. I put in my fastest and best timing on lap 2 and I felt I could go faster. We hope we have better weather tomorrow as we have a long race ahead of us.”
Polomai, who finished second and first in the two races here last year, said: “I am not totally satisfied with the setup, but I will work with my engineers tonight to find more speed.”
There was little to cheer for the home crowd as M Gautam and Sumit Toppo lost track time due to mechanical problems and will start the race from the back of the grid.
