London : After weeks of mounting speculation, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has ruled out holding an early general election, his spokesman confirmed Saturday.
There would be no November election as had been widely anticipated of late, the spokesman said.
Brown’s Labour Party has enjoyed a surge of popularity in opinion polls over the past few weeks – only to see this drastically reduced in the past couple of days.
The opposition Conservative Party, whose leader David Cameron made what many saw as an impressive final speech Wednesday at the party’s annual congress, has drawn level with Labour according to one poll.
Cameron challenged Brown to end uncertainty and call a November election, ending what Cameron called “endless dithering”.
The British political system allows the incumbent prime minister to call an election whenever he or she thinks fit within a five-year parliamentary term.
