Indian chess stars bring first gold in Asian Indoor Games

Macau : India won their first gold medal of the second Asian Indoor Games as they triumphed in the Team competition of Rapid Chess here Saturday.

The Indian team comprised Krishnan Sasikiran, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Koneru Humpy and Dronavalli Harika. They won each of their six round robin matches to grab the gold medal. They won four matches on Friday and two on Saturday. It was a mixed competition with two men and two women in all teams.

Vietnam finished second for silver and Iran grabbed the bronze. The fancied Chinese team failed to win a medal.

With this win, India completed the chess double at Asian Games and Asian Indoor Games. The Indian team had won the gold medal at Doha Asian Games last December. Sasikiran and Humpy have been part of both teams.

The men’s and women’s individual competition will be decided later Saturday and Indians are once again expected to dominate.
