Mumbai : India might have the edge of playing at home but Sri Lanka have the upper hand against their neighbours in World Cup matches and recent One-day Internationals (ODIs) between the two sides.
Sri Lanka have won four of the seven times they have played India with the latter winning on two occasions, with no result from one match.
In their last World Cup meeting, Sri Lanka knocked India out of the 2007 edition with a 69-run win in Port-of-Spain during the league stage.
The record favours the island nation whenever the two teams have met in the World Cup in the sub-continent. In the 1996 edition, Sri Lanka got the better of India in the league stage in Delhi and later in the controversial semifinal at Eden Gardens.
India, on the other hand, recorded their most famous win over the Sri Lankans in Taunton, England in 1999. Sourav Ganguly (183) and Rahul Dravid (145) struck centuries and set up a record 318-run stand for the second wicket to trounce Sri Lanka by 157 runs.
Four years later, the Ganguly-led side inflicted a massive 183-run defeat on Sri Lanka in Johannesburg during the Super Six stages. This was India’s last win against them in the competition.
The statistics go slightly with Sri Lanka in the recent past with six wins out of 10 ODIs. Their last ODI meeting was in tri-series final in Dambulla last year and Sri Lanka emerged winners by 74 runs.
India, however, have a better overall record against the Sri Lankans. The Men in Blue have come out on top 67 times in 182 ODIs against the lions.
The two have met twice at the Wankhede Stadium and share a win each at the historic venue.
