Dilshan’s appointment comes following Kumar Sangakkara’s resignation after Sri Lanka lost the World Cup final to India earlier this month.

“Sri Lanka Cricket is proud to announce the appointment of Tillakaratne Dilshan as the national captain in all three formats of the game for Sri Lanka’s tour of England in May 2011,” an SLC statement said.

SLC, however, didn’t name a vice-captain because “the prospective candidates are nursing injuries, and their availability for the forthcoming tour is still in question”. Mahela Jayawardene also resigned as the vice-captain a day after Sangakkara stepped down.

All-rounder Angelo Matthews is one the frontrunners for the vice-captain’s post.
