New Delhi : The government will introduce a bill in the next session of parliament to create an autonomous nuclear regulatory authority and is also working out a new compensation package for the people displaced by the proposed 9,900 MW Jaitapur nuclear power project in Maharashtra, a minister said Tuesday.
“Government will introduce a bill in next session of parliament to create an independent, autonomous nuclear regulatory authority of India, which will subsume the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board,” Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office V. Narayanasamy told reporters.
This was decided in a meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the current status of the Jaitapur project and the impact of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear tragedy on India’s nuclear programme.
To placate the ongoing protests in Jaitapur, Narayanasamy said that a new compensation package is being decided. “A generous compensation package had been worked out by state government and NPCIL (Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited) and will be announced soon,” said Narayanswamy, flanked by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh and Atomic Energy Commission chief Srikumar Banerjee.
