The report stated that the only positive news was that since the government brought in a new anti-tobacco law in January this year, around 400,000 Spaniards have stopped smoking, Xinhua said.

The new law prohibits smoking in closed public spaces such as bars and restaurants and also in some outdoor areas like children’s playgrounds.

The National Committee for the Prevention of Tobacco has estimated that the new law would prevent around 500,000 illnesses and 10,000 premature deaths over a decade.
