Ranchi : A Muslim bride divorced her husband soon after the marriage ceremony when the groom’s family started demanding dowry.
Guddi, a resident of Pathuria village in Dhanbad, around 270 km from Ranchi, was married to Imtiyaz Ansari on Saturday. After the ceremony, the groom’s family members started demanding dowry from her father, local media reports said.
The bridegroom’s sister also demanded some electronic items and cash.
Irked by their demands, Guddi protested and slapped her husband’s sister.
She decided to divorce her husband and refused to go to her in-laws’ house.
“How can I spend my life with a person who remains a mute spectator to the illegal demands made by his family members,” Guddi said.
Though her family members initially did not agree with her decision, they supported her when she reasoned it out with them.
The bridegroom’s family was forced to cough up Rs.60,000 they had received in the form of dowry earlier.
“I am not worried about my daughter’s divorce. Within hours of marriage, the groom’s family started demanding dowry. I shudder to think what would have happened to my daughter had she gone to her in-laws’ home,” said Guddi’s father Riyasat.
