Kolkata : A decomposed body found in a canal near West Bengal’s Nandigram Tuesday created fresh tension with fears that it could belong to one of the villagers killed by the ruling CPI-M in their week-long action to oust rivals from the area.

“We have recovered a decomposed body of a man of around 35 years of age under Marichda police station area. We cannot say to which group he belongs or if the death is related to the Nandigram clashes but we have registered a murder case,” East Midnapore Superintendent of Police S.S. Panda told IANS.

“The body was recovered from a canal in a decomposed state and so we cannot immediately identify him,” he said.

Launching an onslaught against the Trinamool Congress-backed Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC), the CPI-M regained control of Nandigram, leading to killing, arson and rape.

Guns fell silent in West Bengal’s trouble-torn Nandigram as CRPF marched through villages to ensure peace in the area invaded by armed CPI-M cadres.

Violence in the area has claimed at least 34 lives since January.
