Hong Kong : A Hong Kong policeman was Thursday jailed for eight months for stealing $770 from two suspects he searched.

Lam Sze-kit, 33, stole the money after ordering two men from mainland China to hand over their waist bags for inspection during a stop-and-search operation in April.

Lam was found guilty of two counts of theft at Kowloon City Court where magistrate Raymond Wong said he had blemished the force’s reputation because he stole while in uniform and on duty.

People from main-land China are regularly stopped and searched by police in Hong Kong, looking for illegal immigrants trying to sneak into the wealthy former British colony.
