New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government paid a compensation of Rs.5 lakh to the family of a minor boy who died in police custody in Badaun district in 2008, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said Wednesday.
The NHRC said the state government complied with the commission’s recommendation and paid Rs.5 lakh to the family of Durgesh, 12, a suspect in a theft case.
Durgesh, a resident of Dataganj, died in police custody Jan 20, 2008, the commission said in a statement issued here.
“He became a victim of police excesses in Uttar Pradesh and lost his life,” the commission said.
The state government has imposed upon a sub-inspector a penalty of withholding one year’s increment and a charge sheet has been submitted in a court against him and other police personnel.
The NHRC took action after it received a complaint alleging that Durgesh was brutally beaten up by police while questioning him.
Thereafter, he was hanged to death by police. Five police personnel also ransacked his house, the complaint alleged.
