The competition is being organised by Capital Development Authority from March 16.

“This is a very serious event and a large tract has to be cleared of stones and pebbles, besides the spectators’ area has to be managed properly in view of safety requirements,” Dawn quoted an official as saying.

CDA organised the last tent pegging competition in 2004, but private groups have held tent pegging events at a smaller scale.

The organisers expect participation from around 80 teams.

Tent pegging is an age-old military skill.

“The elephants were like tanks in those days covered with armour all over, so the invaders decided to hit the softest parts of the animals – toes – which were not covered with armour,” said Aziz Khan who breeds up to half a dozen horses for pegging and other sports.
