The institute to be built here is affiliated with the University of Sydney, and will work jointly with the ICMR to identify solutions to major health problems through research, the transition of research findings into policy and practice, and capacity building.

“We are proud to be partnering with the ICMR and the University of Sydney to further strengthen our commitment to India. We will undertake large-scale health research projects and help apply the findings boost relevant health programmes in India,” said Lalit Dandona, senior director, the George Institute, India.

The work under the MoU will focus on research, training and strategic planning. The institute will work on chronic diseases like diabetes and HIV, road traffic injuries and health systems as it already covers some of these health issues under the ongoing projects in India.

The tripartite agreement was signed by officials of the George Institute, University of Sydney and ICMR.

S.K. Bhattacharya, additional director general, ICMR, said it would be a unique collaboration and all 29 institutes of the IMCR would be a part of it.

Bruce Robinson, dean, faculty of medicine, University of Sydney, said they had come together to address many big issues in public health and research in India.
