Ahmedabad : In a major departure from the normal practice of “dictating the terms” for running acquired companies, Tata Steel has set up 20 different working groups to find out and integrate best practices of its overseas acquisitions — Corus and Natsteel.

This, the company says, will help its new five-year roadmap to produce over 20 million tonnes of steel by 2010-11, more than double of what it produced in 2006-07.

Although Tata Steel and Corus are working as separate entities, they have decided that all strategic decisions will be taken in tandem.

According to Nadeem Kazim, head of management development at Tata Steel Ltd, human resources (HR) management in Tata Steel has been reengineered to attain the goals of its roadmap.

Kazim outlined the HR practices of Tata Steel at the Ahmedabad Management Association.

The reengineering was necessary because the company had operations in eight geographical locations instead of the earlier three, and needed to serve customers worldwide now, he pointed out.

Kazim disclosed that the company has launched a programme to achieve the right size. Its aim is to reduce manpower from 78,000 to 38,000, attain multi-skill mix, and reduce the average age from 47 to 42 years.
