Rohtak/Kurukshetra : President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Friday urged the nation's doctors to work for rural patients.
Addressing a convocation at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak, Kalam called upon doctors to make medical facilities available for village India.
If each doctor showed the zeal to treat at least 20 rural patients a year, the president advised, a lot of diseases could be taken care of.
Kalam also told doctors to make full use of technology to provide the best and cost-effective treatment.
The president also addressed a special convocation of Kurukshetra University where he extolled Haryana as the land not only of history and "dharma", but also of progress.
"Haryana is one of the five most economically developed states in the country – the land of action, righteousness and dharma having a society strengthened with ethics and values," he said during the golden jubilee commemorative convocation.
The president pointed out that Haryana was the second largest contributor of foodgrains to the central pool, and the hub of automobile manufacturing in the country.
University chancellor and Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai conferred honorary degree of doctor of laws to Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan, Union Law Minister H.R. Bhardwaj and veteran freedom fighter Ranbir Singh Hooda.
Hooda, the father of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, could not attend the ceremony because of the death of his elder son Joginder Hooda this week.
