Raipur(IANS) : At least three policemen were killed as Maoist militants blew up a police station in Chhattisgarh late Wednesday evening, a senior police officer said.
“Rebels armed with self-loading rifles (SLRs) surrounded the Vishrampuri police station in Bastar district around 8.30 p.m. and fired over 100 rounds all around after snapping telephone lines and blocking all approach roads,” Girdhari Nayak, inspector general of police (Maoist Operations), told IANS by phone.
“At least three policemen were killed and two were critically wounded,” he added.
The Vishrampuri police station is located some 225 km south of capital Raipur.
Maoists could not manage to loot weapons from the police post, the official added.
The attack is considered in retaliation of a statement of Director General of Police Vishwaranjan who was currently in Jagdalpur, Bastar district headquarters. He told mediapersons Tuesday: “Police will take rebels head on in their hideouts.”
Chhattisgarh is one of the 13 worst Maoist-hit states with about 900 people killed in the state since 2005.
