New Delhi : India resumed railway service of the Samjhauta Express to Pakistan Sunday, which was suspended for security considerations in the wake of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
All train and bus services to Pakistan, except the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus, were suspended for indefinite period following widespread violence in that country in the aftermath of the assassination.
“We have resumed services of the Samjhauta Express after reviewing the situation,” a railway ministry official told IANS.
The Samjhauta Express runs from Attari, India’s last railhead in Amritsar district of Punjab, to Lahore in Pakistan every Monday and Thursday, and makes the return run from Lahore every Tuesday and Friday.
Senior home ministry officials said Friday the government would cancel transport links on security considerations with immediate effect until further notice.
However, no decision has yet been taken on resuming services of the Munabao-Zero Point-Munabao Thar Express, Jodhpur-Munabao-Jodhpur Link Express train and the Delhi-Lahore bus service.
The decision was taken after consultation with the ministry of home affairs, ministry of external affairs and railway officials of Pakistan, sources said.
