Riyadh : Saudi Arabia has donated $100 million to the International Center for Counterterrorism (ICCT), an umbrella organization of the United Nations.
Earlier, the Kingdom had supported the establishment of the New York-based ICCT by providing $10 million.
Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon thanked the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, for extending his support to the United Nations’ endeavors to fight terrorism in the form assistance to the center. The appreciation came on Tuesday at a meeting between Ban Ki-moon and Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Saud Al-Faisal before the start of the Conference of Geneva 2, which began on Wednesday in the Swiss city of Montreux.
The two dignitaries discussed several issues including the peace process in Syria and the urgent need to stop the Syrian crisis which has been continuing for the past three years. It may be mentioned that Saudi Arabia initiated the idea to set up the center in 2005, and signed an agreement with the United Nations to create it in 2011.
