Lucknow: Seven members of a family were killed Friday when a train rammed into their vehicle at an unmanned railway crossing in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district, police said.
The family of 11 was headed to attend a marriage at Sitarganj in Rampur district, over 300 km from here, when their vehicle was hit by Saptkranti Express, headed from Kathgodam to New Delhi. The accident occurred at an unmanned crossing at Bengali Colony in Bilaspur around 11 a.m.
The dead were from the family of Jeet Singh, a resident of Majkheda.
Rampur’s Superintendent of Police Sadhna Goswami told IANS that while seven people were killed on the spot, three others were injured and were taken to a nearby medical facility. The vehicle’s driver is missing and police suspect he fled the scene of the accident.
The railways, meanwhile, have ordered a probe into the accident. Traffic on the rail route was disrupted for over an hour but resumed after the wreckage of the vehicle was removed from the tracks.
