Islamabad : A suicide bomber attacked the entrance to a Pakistani army base camp Monday in the restive Swat valley in the northwest of the country, killing himself and injuring three soldiers, a military spokesman said.
The bomber blew himself up after being stopped at a security checkpoint in Kabal sub-district, site of the army’s largest base camp in the Swat valley, around 11:30 a.m., said Major-General Waheed Arshad, the chief army spokesman.
“Three soldiers received minor injuries,” he said.
Multiple suicide bombers have attacked military targets in Swat in recent months, where the Pakistani army has been conducting operations since late October 2007 to clear out armed Islamic militants who had taken over villages and towns in the valley.
The militants are followers of a radical Islamic cleric, Fazlullah, who is attempting to impose Taliban-style Islamic rule in the region, which is only a four-hour drive away from the capital Islamabad.
