New Delhi: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Thursday announced the result for civil services examination (2013), based on the results of the written part of Civil Services Examination, 2013 held in December, 2013 and the interviews for Personality Test held in April-June, 2014.
A total number of 1122 candidates have been recommended for appointment, only 34 (3%) of which are Muslims. Jaipur’s Gaurav Agrawal has topped this year’s civil service examination.
Of the 34 successful Muslim candidates, six of them are females. Eight of them (34) are from a single state of Jammu and Kashmir, thus 26 from rest of the country. Among 34 Muslim candidates, Faiz Ahmed Mumtaz ranked highest with 17, while Sana Akhtar ranked 90.
Of total 1122 candidates, 517 candidates are from the General category, 326 from OBC, 187 belong to SCs while 92 of them are STs.
Although Muslims comprise 13.4% of total population, they are dismally represented in the top government services, often due to lack of education and unavailability of resources. They are roughly 2% in the civil services.
The performance of successful Muslim candidates is almost same in numbers if compared with the results of last few years. Last year, only 31 Muslims could make it to the final list our of total 998 successful candidates. In 2012, 30 Muslims were selected, while in 2011, 31 Muslims were among the 920 successful candidates. In 2010, only 21 Muslims had made to the final list out of 875 successful candidates, although Dr. Shah Faisal from Kashmir had topped that year. In 2009, 31 were Muslims out of total 791 successful candidates.
The successful UPSC candidates would be recommended for appointment in order of merit to following services:
(i) Indian Administrative Service;
(ii) Indian Foreign Service;
(iii) Indian Police Service; and
(iv) Central Services, Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’
