British boxer Amir Khan banned from driving

LONDON, Jan 07 (APP)-The British and Commonwealth lightweight boxing champion Amir Khan has been banned from driving for 42 days and fined one thousand pounds for speeding at 140 mph on a motorway, reports local media. A court in Rochdale, central England, heard how the 21-year-old Commonwealth lightweight title-holder hit twice the legal speed limit while behind the wheel of his BMW convertible on the M62 near Greater Manchester, on New Year’s Eve 2006.

A police officer told the Court that his speedometer was “off the clock” at 155mph as he pursued him on the M62.

Amir had denied the charge but during his trial admitted his speed may have reached around 75mph.

Amir, who won silver for Great Britain in the 2004 Athens Olympics, was given a six month ban in October last year and fined 100 pounds at Bolton Crown Court after speeding through a red light in the wrong lane. His careless driving led to him knocking down a pedestrian on a pelican crossing, breaking the man’s leg.

Despite the previous ban Amir is believed to have recently bought a 58,000 pounds Range Rover Sport V8 as a Christmas present for himself.
