Iran: Strait Incident Common

Tehran, (Prensa Latina) The Iranian Foreign Affairs Ministry considered on Monday that the weekend events in the Strait of Hormuz between Iranian motorboats and US Navy ships were something normal and ordinary.

The narrow (21-miles-at its narrowest) strait is a strategically important oil waterway between the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, and is between Iran and the United Arab Emirates and an enclave of Oman.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said the incident was similar to precedent cases, and once the parties are identified, problems are solved.

Hosseini s statements were given at the same time as those of US Pentagon officials, who said that five motorboats belonging to the Iranian Revolution Guards provoked three US warships in international waters.

According to sources that preferred to remain anonymous, the Iranian Navy motorboats made threatening maneuvers against the US ships.

The White House warned Tehran it must abstain from provocations that might lead to an incident in the future.

The United States accuses Iran of developing a nuclear program with military objectives, while Iranian authorities insist the use of nuclear energy is exclusively peaceful.
