Afghan vice president accused of election fraud

Kabul : The team of Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah Sunday accused Vice President Mohammad Karim Khalili of siding with opponent Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and involvement in electoral fraud.

A member from Abdullah’s team played an audio tape as an evidence regarding Khalili’s involvement in the alleged electoral fraud, Xinhua reported.

However, Khalili has rejected the claim and tweeted saying, “This tape is a fake.”

“Khalili had said that the government, the president, the election commissions were in favour of Abdullah,” the member said.

Abdullah’s team in the past had accused Ziaul Haq Omarkhil, the ex-chief secretary of the Election Commission of siding with Ahmadzai and involvement in fraud which prompted Omarkhil to resign.

Afghanistan’s presidential runoff was held June 14 but the result is yet to be announced.
