Thiruvananthapuram : The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will upgrade two national highways (NH) with a total length of 837 km to four lanes, a senior state government official said here Friday.
“NH-47 and NH-17 with a total length of 837 km from one end of the state to the other would now have four lane roads. This has been cleared by the central government and the NHAI. It will take four years for the work to be completed,” state Public Works Minister Mons Joseph told reporters here.
“Discussions for this have already begun and soon the detailed report would be ready. We have to complete the land acquisition for the upgradation and for that we will soon appoint a special officer,” said Joseph.
The cost of upgradation of one kilometre is estimated to be Rs.60 million ($1.5 million).
“The toll to be levied and other details would be worked out later. The central government is also considering developing three other existing national highways which pass through the state,” added the minister.
The total length of national highways in the state is 1,526 km.
