Kota (Rajasthan): Activists of the Welfare Party of India (WPI) on Monday staged a protest here by burning an effigy of Rajasthan’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) officer Dinesh Sharma for directly threatening senior Supreme Court lawyer Mahmood Pracha for defending terror case accused.
The protesters also demanded his immediate suspension.
Condemning the incidence of assault attempt and a straight threat by the ATS officer to Advocate Pracha, activists of WPI protested at J P Circle in the city and handed over a memorandum to city collector demanding Sharma’s suspension.
The gathering also demanded the collector and the authority to provide full proof security to Advocate Pracha.
Earlier, Sharma had directly threatened Pracha on June 11 for defending terror case accused persons. The incident had happened just outside the Sessions court chamber in Jaipur around 12.30 pm that day when Sharma tried to assault and straightforwardly threatened Pracha. He also said if Pracha does not leave the cases, then he (Pracha) would be killed.
In a press release Dinesh Saxena, media secretary of WPI said, “We strongly condemn the incidence of June 11 when Advocate Pracha was threatened by the ATS officer. We have today handed over a memorandum demanding suspension of Sharma and to provide protection to Advocate Pracha.”
Addressing the protesters, Saifullah, party’s state unit, said: “The statistics show that there is only 1% of conviction that is achieved by ATS in terrorism related cases, meaning 99% of the accused are released because they are innocent. Does it not explain that ATS cases are bogus and futures of youths are unnecessarily being destroyed?”
“ATS cases are evidence-less and this is the reason that now they are threatening the seeker of justice who are positively defending accused persons. Threat from ATS to advocate is an attack on constitution and the Indian judiciary,” he added.
