Goals from Kaka, Clarence Seedorf and Alberto Gilardino gave Milan a 3-0 win Wednesday night for a 5-3 aggregate victory and a place in the final against Liverpool, a repeat of the 2005 final, won by the English side on penalties.

“We gave the goals away very cheaply and at that level you can’t do that,” Ferguson said.

“I think they were better prepared physically, they’ve been resting players and that can make a difference. They were certainly sharper and quicker to the ball and pressed really well,” he said.

Ferguson said Man United were on the defensive throughout the game.

“I think they’ve been good winners. We were on the back foot all the time and found it difficult,” he said.

“For 15 minutes after half-time it looked as if we were getting some momentum and had a half chance but we needed that goal to turn the game round. But in fairness we didn’t really look as if we were going to score.”
