AMU celebrates Independence Day with fervor

Aligarh: Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah, Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University has urged all the members of AMU fraternity to work for the promotion of unity and fraternity in the University and help keep the University campus free from regional and factional malice.

Gen. Shah was addressing the University community after hoisting the national flag yesterday at the historic Strachey Hall on the occasion of 69th Independence Day of India. He said that “this great institution is serving the country for over a century and with the passage of time it has achieved a reputed place amongst Indian universities. He said that AMU’s ranking is growing steadily as is apparent from different ranking surveys published recently.

Gen. Shah said that University has witnessed a series of development works including the establishment of a new Faculty of International Studies. He said that the faculty which has eight departments of study, has already launched undergraduate programmes under the Department of Foreign Languages. He said that the research arena of the institution has also widened with three times increase witnessed in the number of PhD scholars.

The Vice Chancellor pointed out that the founder of this great seat of learning, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan wanted this institution to become a big centre for modern scientific learning. He said that the University is running ten schools and we are focusing on increasing the teaching standard of these schools as a strengthened foundation at school level will only help the University to become the best. He announced that a selection drive will start from September 15 to appoint qualified teachers for these schools.

Mentioning the various development measures, Gen. Shah said that 40 Smart Classrooms have been established in the University and a vast renovation work is undergoing at the Strachey Hall and Kennedy Auditorium. “We are also making efforts to start renovation of University Jama Majid also, as soon as possible”, he added.

The Vice Chancellor urged that University alumni to attend the Annual Alumni Meet in large numbers, which will be organized on October 18-19, 2015. He said that the Annual Convocation will be held in March 2016. He said that the WiFi connectivity speed will be increased.

Referring to the proposed Common University Act and Common Entrance Test, Gen. Shah reiterated that AMU will not accept it as it is not in the interest of the University. However, the Choice Based Credit System, which has relevance for the University, will be implemented.

The Vice Chancellor vowed to revive the past glory of the University and urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the University administration. He urged the people to abstain from Dharna and strikes as these measures will only hamper the development journey of the University.

Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah launched a massive plantation drive under the motivational “one student, one tree” programme.

Mrs. Sabiha Simi Shah inaugurated a hostel for ninth class girl students at the Abdullah Hall of residence.

Earlier, on the eve of the Independence Day, a poetic evening was organized by the Department of Urdu. Inaugurating the poetic extravaganza, Vice Chancellor Gen. Shah said that protection and promotion of Urdu language was the basic objective of the Department of Urdu which it was fulfilling responsibly. He said that promotion of the Urdu language was a collective responsibility.

Prof. Syed Mohammad Hashim, Chairman, Department of Urdu welcomed the guests and highlighted the role of Urdu poets in creating an awakening amongst Indian people during the freedom struggle.

Dr. Siraj Ajmali conducted the programme while Prof. Sagheer Afraheem proposed a vote of thanks. Renowned poets including Zuber Rizvi, Ishrat zafar, Mahtab Haider Naqvi, Shahabuddin Saquib, Meraj Nishat, Nasir Shakeib, Moin Rasheedi, Rizwanur Raza Rizwan, Shahzad Anjum, Zaheer Sahili, Muhiuddin Gulfam, Abid Ali Abid etc. recited their poetry.
