Aligarh: The Sir Syed Bi-Centenary Celebrations Committee today organised a symposium on ‘Relevance of Sir Syed’s Teachings in Modern Era’ at IIMT, Panchsheel Colony, Aligarh.

Renowned Paediatrician, Dr Hameeda Tariq, who attended the function as the Chief Guest said, “Sir Syed was a great visionary and social reformer who fulfilled his dream of bringing modern scientific education to the masses of Indian Society.”

She added that Sir Syed’s concept of secularism is instinct with the same spirit of mutual tolerance, peaceful national co-existence and freedom of worship as was enshrined in the Indian constitution after independence. Dr Hameeda urged students to work for national unity, progress and development of the country.

Guest of Honour, Mr B Singh (ADM Finance, Aligarh) said that since Syed was a reformer, who worked for the betterment of society, AMU today is reflective of Sir Syed’s personality straits. “Students in AMU become better human beings with the best of education,” said Mr B Singh.

Guest of Honor at the event Prof Shambhu Nath Tiwari said that Sir Syed believed that only western education could empower common Indians with the ability to survive with dignity. “Hence, he took up the task of setting an institution for the purpose,” said Prof Tiwari.

Prof Shakeel Samdani (Programme Coordinator) said that the 1857 mutiny shattered the souls and minds of the common and the elite alike and in this gloomy scenario Sir Syed Ahmed Khan decided to take upon himself the challenge of bringing scientific education to the masses.

Pankaj Mahalwar (Secretary, IIMT) pointed out that AMU’s colossal stature is inspiration for all educational institutions in India.

Eram Dilshad and Nisha Sharma also spoke on the occasion. Dr Sarwath Usmani conducted the programme.
