Half a dozen students of Banaras Hindu University have been detained in Delhi while they were on their way to meet Prime Minister’s secretary to hand over a memorandum regarding the recent incident in Banaras Hindu University last week.
Students, who are the members of recently-constituted Joint Action Committee at BHU, had come to the National Commission for Women’s office to register a complaint against misogynist behavior of Prof GC Tripathi, the vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University.
After a successful meeting with Rekha Sharma, a member of NCW, the student delegation sought to make an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is also the member of parliament from Varanasi constituency.
As the appointment was not given to these students, the students were going to Prime Minister’s office to hand over a memorandum to one of his secretaries.
While these students were on their way to PMO, CRPF and Police personnel stopped the bus in the way and took the students to the Chanakyapuri Police Station. Even after students enquired countless times on the ground over which they were arrested, police did not say anything.
According to Mineshi Mishra, who is also arrested with the others, students have refused to get down from the bus. No female constable accompanied the police to arrest the group of students in which Mineshi Mishra was also present as a girl.
Along with Mineshi Mishra, other arrested are Manish Sharma, Vikas Singh, Deepak Singh, Rohit Bharti and Atul Yadav. Even as activists and students around Delhi are arriving in at Chanakyapuri, the Police is not letting anyone in.
However, the duty officer at Chanakyapuri PS informed that he will only be able to answer questions once he gets the full information. According to the students, they were under constant surveillance. More details on the arrests is yet to come.
