New Delhi : The man, arrested from Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh's residence for allegedly offering help in settling a court case against party president and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, was an impostor, police said Tuesday.
"The accused, B.K. Verma, has no connection with the law ministry or any Supreme Court judge. He impersonated as a senior law officer to extort money from Amar Singh," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Alok Kumar said.
A city court Tuesday sent the accused to one-day police custody for further investigations.
Verma, 40, a resident of Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi, was arrested Monday for demanding Rs.50 million from the Samajwadi Party leader.
Kumar said Verma, a native of Bihar, had come to the city in 1999 and worked in a private firm. He also worked as an assistant to a senior income-tax lawyer in south Delhi.
After reading about a corruption case against Mulayam Singh Yadav and his MP son Akhilesh Yadav in March, Verma posed as a senior government law officer and offered 'help'. He had been making phone calls to Amar Singh offering to settle the case.
