New Delhi : A Delhi court Tuesday sent a man, who allegedly arranged donors for the illegal kidney transplant racket of Amit Kumar, to four-day custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjeev Jain granted the CBI the custody of Manoj Kumar, 27, till Feb 23 for interrogation.
Following the questioning of Jeewan Raut, Amit Kumar’s brother and associate, the CBI Tuesday arrested Manoj from Palam Vihar in Gurgaon, near Delhi.
Jeewan was arrested Sunday after being on the run since the multi-million-rupee racket was busted Jan 24.
Appearing for the investigative agency, counsel A.K. Singh demanded Manoj’s custody as his interrogation was necessary for unravelling the racket that has international ramifications.
Singh contended that Manoj was working at the illegal nursing home run by Amit Kumar alias Santosh Rameswar Raut in Gurgaon and he was the conduit for the main accused in finding poor people whose kidney could be taken out.
Amit Kumar and his associates allegedly obtained kidneys from poor labourers illegally, often under coercion, and transplanted these to patients from India and abroad.
CBI sources say Manoj’s interrogation is necessary to find out who all helped 43-year-old ayurvedic doctor Amit Kumar.
Amit Kumar, who was arrested Feb 7 from Nepal, had allegedly performed 600 illegal kidney transplants in a decade.
