Yangon : A huge fire razed a major market building in Myanmar’s second largest city of Mandalay Monday morning, the police said.
The fire started at about 8 a.m. and burned down the five-storey Yadanabon Market in downtown Mandalay near the railway station.
More than 10 people, mostly fire fighters, were injured in the fire, the police said.
According to initial reports, the fire destroyed the Yadanabon Cyber Corporation, an important Information and Communications Technology park established on the fourth storey of the market building serving the Internet link of the city.
A Chinese computer training centre, a shopping mall, many offices and domestic products trading centres dealing with border trade were among the establishments gutted in the fire.
An electric short circuit on the ground floor in the eastern wing of the market is believed to be the cause of the fire.
The Yadanabon market, which accommodates about 300 shops, is known as the second largest after Zay Cho, a historically famous market in the northern ancient city. According to residents, most of the shops in the complex are owned by ethnic Chinese.
