New Delhi: Muslims’ share in politics and their dignified life in the society wholly depend on their unity, said Mufti Mahfoozur Rahman Usmani, secretary general of Imam Qasim Islamic Educational Trust in New Delhi.

Addressing a seminar on Muslim empowerment at the headquarters of the trust in the capital on 28th February, Mufti Usmani said public representatives hardly bother about Muslim problems after winning elections even though their victory was made possible by Muslim vote. These politicians are more concerned about their party and party leaders, said he.

Addressing the program, author Ali Anwar said if the purpose of the Sachar Committee recommendations was awarding some more scholarships to Muslim students, there was no need to form this committee at all. Because scholarships have been given in the past and scholarships cannot change the socio-economic and political conditions of a community, he said. There is a need of Muslim empowerment without which neither respect nor self-esteem could be gained.

Several parliamentary and assembly constituencies have been reserved for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes in spite of Muslim majority in those constituencies. Muslims will have to evolve pressure groups at each level in order to ensure their share in politics, he said.
