Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati appears to have developed a sudden passion for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Since the time she stormed to power last year, the chief minister has sought CBI probe into at least eight high-profile cases, mostly involving politicians.
The central government has not obliged her – thus far.
Last week, she made her eighth request – this time over a controversial CD in which Hindu god Ram has been dubbed anti-Dalit.
“Since the name of a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP is being dragged into the controversy, I think the case should be handed over to the CBI,” Mayawati said here last week.
The MP is Lalmani Prasad, who represents Basti in the Lok Sabha. The CD is doing the rounds in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
The cases in which Mayawati has sought a CBI inquiry include irregularities in police recruitment, BSP legislator Raju Pal’s murder in Allahabad, out of turn allotment of prime plots in Noida by the Mulayam Singh Yadav government and largescale pilferage of food grains from the pubic distribution system.
A CBI officer told IANS: “We are not investigating any of these cases. It is up to the union government to transfer a case after receiving a request from a state.”
