Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ashok K. Kantha said the capacity building training was provided in various fields such as banking, Information Communication and Technology (ICT), audit and accounts, hydrology, management and journalism.

“Training under this programme is one of the important aspects of the multi-faceted relationship between India and Malaysia. Since the early 1990s, 183 Malaysian candidates have participated in ITEC training programmes,” he said in a statement here Wednesday.

Kantha said currently, Malaysia was allocated about 20 training slots annually, which was expected to go up substantially during the current fiscal.

He said the ITEC was launched in 1964, as a bilateral programme of assistance to the newly independent countries of the Third World in the 1950’s and early 60’s. Under ITEC, 1,350 training slots were allotted each year to developing countries and so far, over 30,000 foreign participants from 144 countries benefited from the training programmes, said Kantha.

The high commissioner also urged Malaysian students to take full advantage of various education schemes, particularly under the Self Financing Scheme for Medical, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Engineering.

“The existing opportunities were not being optimally utilised,” he said.
