NGOs show interest in Chandigarh’s campaign against smoking

Chandigarh : Several non-government organisations (NGOs) from different states have shown interest in Chandigarh administration's efforts to make the city smoke-free by July.

NGOs from Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi desire to launch similar smoke-free campaigns in their states.

"We are going to make our villages smoke-free too just like Chandigarh," an NGO worker, Sheetal, from Theog district in Himachal Pradesh, said here Sunday.

Sheetal was a member of on-field observers group of NGOs constituted as part of a workshop conducted here by Burning Brain Society in association with the Chandigarh police.

At least 28 NGOs participated in a two-day workshop that concluded Sunday on the issue of "Action against tobacco". They also saw seven police teams carrying on the campaign against smoking in the city.

Piyush Gupta, president of Cancer Aid Society from Lucknow appreciated the way in which the city police were enforcing the tobacco control legislation by effectively blending education with enforcement.
