Chinese hostages in Pakistan released

Islamabad : Nine people including seven Chinese nationals were released after being abducted by religious students here Saturday, abductors said.

A top official of the controversial Lal Masjid or Red Mosque, Abdul Rashid Gazi, announced at a press conference that they released the hostages on the basis of good relationship between China and Pakistan and assurances from the Pakistani authorities.

He also said that he would like to invite the Chinese envoy here to visit the mosque.

A Chinese couple, five of their women employees and two Pakistani men were abducted from their residence here early in the morning by the students of Lal Masjid.

The hostages were detained in Jamia Hafsa, a religious school under the mosque.
