"Nihad Muhammad al-Rawi, a professor and deputy head of Baghdad University, was shot dead by gunmen in Baghdad's southern district of Baiyaa," the source said on condition of anonymity.

Some 300 Iraqi university professors and senior academics have been killed or kidnapped in Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003.

Thousands more professors and academics left the country for the sake of safety and better life, causing a brain drain in the country.

Elsewhere, insurgents traded fire with police patrol in the town of Madain, some 30 km southeast of Baghdad, killing a policeman and wounding three, the source said.

Separately, a roadside bomb blast wounded three civilians in Baghdad eastern neighbourhood of Baldiyat, the source added.

Violence continues in the capital despite the U.S. and Iraqi security offensive, which has not achieved substantial progress in reducing violence in the war-torn Iraq.
