A court in Bandipora sentenced Rashtriya Rifles soldiers Kulwant Singh and Gadminder Singh to two days police remand. This follows the rejection of an application by the army that had sought the release of the soldiers Thursday.

The two are alleged to have entered a house in Kunan village in Bandipora late Wednesday and attempted to rape a 17-year-old girl.

The incident had sparked widespread protests in the area and the police had to intervene Thursday to take the soldiers into custody from an irate mob.

Defence Minister A.K. Antony announced a probe into the incident in New Delhi.

Lieutenant General A.S. Sekhon, commander of the army's Srinagar based 15 Corps, also said that no army personnel would be spared if found guilty of crimes against civilians.

"The army would not tolerate such incidents by its soldiers," Sekhon said.
