Ten people inside a Madurai bound bus passing through at the time were also injured in the powerful blast that took place at about 1.30 p.m. when the DMK municipality chairperson P. Murugan was getting into his car parked near the bus stand in Sivaganga, about 550 km from here.

Murugan and his driver Pandi were rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai, about 50 km away, but died on the way.

The bus passengers were admitted to the Sivaganga Government Hospital, police said.

Both Madurai and Sivaganga are tense. Officials said security had been stepped up in both towns.
