Civilians injured in train explosion near Sri Lankan capital

New Delhi : At least 17 civilians were injured in a bomb blast on a railway track aimed at a passenger train Wednesday, near the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo.

“An improvised explosive device placed on the railway track between Wellawatte and Dehiwela exploded after the Colombo-bound Panadura passenger train passed that way this morning,” Sri Lankan Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told news agency Indo Asian News Service.

“17 civilians who sustained minor injuries in the blast have been admitted to the Kalubhowila National Hospital,” Brig Nanayakkara said, adding, minor damages were caused to the railway track, but (the blast) had not affected the coastal train services.

On May 26, nine civilians were killed and 72 injured in a powerful explosion on a railway compartment, also in Dehiwela.
