Maulana Muhammad Salim Qasmi and Maulana Umaiduzzaman Kairanvi, president and general secretary of the Mushawarat respectively, in a joint statement issued here Monday, severely condemned the Gujarat police's bid to arrest Mufti Ashraf Ali in Hyderabad, calling it "part of a well-planned conspiracy" against Muslims.

"The attitude of Gujarat and Hyderabad police towards Muslims has been turning more and more communally aggressive for the last few months. Just in order to cover their failures they are beating about the bush," the statement said.

The Mushawarat leaders also sought the direct intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajshekhra Reddy in this matter.

Condemning the detention of Mufti Ashraf Ali, All India Tanzeem-ul-Muslimeen general secretary Maulana Habibullah Hashmi said, "The Hyderabad police is selectively arresting Muslims under a planned conspiracy. It seems the police is willingly leaving the real culprits of bomb blasts go scot-free, and in order to divert the attention of people sending Muslims behind the bars."

Maulana Hashmi also appealed to the UPA government as well as Muslim leaders to intervene in this matter.

President All India Deeni Madaris Board Maulana Muhammad Yaqoob Bulandshahri also condemned the detention of Mufti Ashraf Ali, calling it "a conspiracy to defame Ulema and madrasa functionaries."

"Despite the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, the cases of desecration of mosques and framing Ulema and madrasa functionaries are taking place in the States where Congress is in power," Maulana Yaqoob said.
