Karachi : International cricket will be revived in Canada when Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh besides the hosts play in a four-nation Twenty20 International tournament in Toronto next month.
The events organisers have confirmed that the quadrangular will be played from August 14-17 and believe that Pakistan’s participation in the event will be a big boost to cricket in Canada.
Noman Nabi, chairman of the organising company, Sports International Marketing, says things are quickly falling in place and the event will be a success, reports Pakistan daily The News.
Noman promised a packed stadium for the event’s games, saying that around 12,000 spectators will witness each of them.
The tournament faced major hiccups last month when the original organisers backed out. “We only came in the picture last month and signed an MoU with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in mid June,” said Noman.
He said the organisers have now negotiated with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Cricket Canada.
“They (Cricket Canada) have assured us that they would soon confirm the participation of the West Indies in the tournament.”
Noman said that one of the reasons behind the delay in confirming the four-day event is that Cricket Canada were apprehensive about the venture because the previous organisers had backed out of the project. There were no such fears this time around as the Canadian Cricket Association has been paid security deposit.
Noman said a Dubai-based company has also shown interest by chipping in as title sponsors.
