Kozhikode : It might be Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s past obligations to the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are forcing him to push the India-US civil nuclear deal, Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said Tuesday.
“It may be Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s obligation to those in the World Bank and IMF, where he had held positions, that makes him go ahead with the nuclear deal,” he said.
Inaugurating a meeting organised by the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) against the price-rise and nuclear deal here, the chief minister said it was the Left parties who were instrumental in formulating the Congress-led government’s National Rural Employment Guaranty Programme (NREGP) and bringing the legislation which gave forest dwelling communities right over land and other resources.
Achuthanandan said Manmohan Singh was trying to dilute non-alignment policy propounded by India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. “The Congressmen who claim they respect Pandit Nehru are now trying to justify Manmohan Singh,” he said.
