New Delhi : The Gujarat government Thursday sought time from the Supreme Court to complete its probe into the staged killing of Ujjain youth Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausar Bi by the state police in November 2005.
In its latest status report on the probe filed in the apex court registry in a sealed envelope, Gujarat Inspector General of Police Geeta Johri, who is supervising the enquiry, said it was nearly complete.
Legal sources privy to the contents of the report said Johri had sought time to file charges in the case after completing the probe.
According to the sources, the probe team is likely to make a few more arrests in the case.
A Gujarat Police team had allegedly killed Ujjain resident Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kausar Bi and their associate Tulsiram Prajapati on Nov. 26, 2005 after their abduction from a bus on its way to Sangli in Maharashtra from Hyderabad.
Soon after the abduction, Gujarat Deputy Inspector General D.G. Vanzara had announced Sheikh's killing in a shootout, dubbing him as a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist on a mission to assassinate Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders.
During the probe into the staged killings, the state police has arrested and booked several of its officers, including Vanzara and another posted with the Rajasthan Police for their alleged role in the killings.
Johri's team had also been examining the role of some police officers from Hyderabad.
The Gujarat government had on May 2 admitted before the Supreme Court that the state police had also killed Kausar Bi.
