The DYFI, the youth wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), organised a ‘Freedom Protection Rally’ against the nuclear deal, while the PDP led by Abdul Nasir Madani launched a state-wide campaign against the deal at a public meeting in the evening here.

“This evening, we have organised rallies in 160 centres. Those who took part in the programme took a pledge to protect the freedom of the country,” said T.V. Rajesh, state secretary of DYFI.

The PDP alleged that the government had cheated the country by going ahead with the nuclear deal with the US.

“We are launching a campaign at today’s public meeting. We will take this to the entire 140 assembly constituencies in the state in the coming days and also hold a house-to-house campaign against the deal,” said Gafoor Puduppadi, state general secretary of the PDP.

The PDP said they were organising the campaign with an eye on the parliamentary election. There was speculation that it would field a candidate for the coming polls.
