Toronto : There are yet no clues to a hoax bomb call that delayed a Jet Airways flight to India from Pearson International Airport here early this week.
The police for Peel Region, under which the airport falls, confirmed that the hoax call was made about two hours before Jet Airways Flight 225 was to take off at 8.30 p.m. Monday.
The plane was thoroughly checked before it was allowed to take off many hours later early Tuesday. The police said they knew that this was most likely a hoax call but still grounded the plane for a thorough search.
Jet Airways started its four weekly India-Canada flights last October, connecting Toronto to Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai via Brussels.
This is the second such incident involving any Indian airline in the past two years.
In September 2006, an Air India flight from Toronto to India via Birmingham returned to the airport one hour after the take-off as a suspicious package was reported in one of its washrooms.
The package, which turned out to contain some tools, was destroyed by a controlled explosion.
Since it was first such incident after the killing of 329 passengers in the 1985 bombing of Air India Kaniskha, the police checked the plane and the luggage and interviewed all the passengers before letting it take off next day.
With pro-Khalistan elements again becoming active in Canada, many suspect the fringe group of Sikh separatists may be behind this mischief.
The Indian government has already brought their activities to attention of the Canadian government which banned Babbar Khalsa and the International Sikh Youth Federation in 2006.
