Four die in biogas plant explosion in Ernakulam

Kochi: Four people were killed and several others injured when a biogas plant exploded at Aluva in Ernakulam yesterday. About six people are reported to be missing.

The explosion took place at the biogas plant under construction in the compound of the Al Jamia Al Kausariya Arabic College in Aluva at around noon yesterday. Muhammed Ansari, plant construction engineer and native of Lucknow, Safan Giri, employee from West Bengal and Lal from Kerala lost their lives in the accident. Another one dead is yet to be identified.

The construction of the biogas plant began in August last year and was to be completed next week. The final piping works of the plant were going on. The plant, being constructed at a cost of Rs 1 crore, was to be the biggest biogas plant of Kerala which could supply gas to 1500 cylinders daily. The plant was 40 feet deep and covered an area of 2500 cubic metres.

People rushed to the place on hearing the big sound of explosion. People informed the police and fire force units who came to the spot and began rescue activities immediately. The police and fire force are transferring the waste in the big plant to a nearby pit so as to rescue if anybody is still in the plant.
