Cow in contemporary political chessboard

By Ram Puniyani,

Karnataka BJP Government has passed “Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill 2010” (June 2010). There has been a strong opposition to this move from the civil society. Some of social activists point out that this piece of legislation is “communal in intent and anti-farmer in consequence”. There have been series of meetings to express the concern of people, especially those of dalits and farmers to this legislation. Some of them said that implementation of the bill in its present form will deprive citizens the freedom to choose their food.

Mr. Girish Karnad the noted film personality asked “As long as their choice of food is not affecting others, why its consumption should be prohibited?” Others pointed out that the bill is trying to polarize the majority and minority communities through this bill. It was also pointed out that Gujarat, where such a law already exists, was a leading beef exporter in the country. The points made also indicated that the controversial anti-cow slaughter Bill, if implemented, would discourage farmers from rearing cattle and will lead to a shortage of milk.

It is not the first time that the debate around Cow slaughter bills, beef eating is taking place. When BJP led NDA was in power it went to the extent of appointing a committee to go into the matter and the committee concluded that cow protection should be made fundamental right and there is a need to constitute Central Rapid Protection Force to prevent cow slaughter, and also to invoke POTA to detain those smuggling cows! The Cow obsession of BJP is a part of deeper agenda of targeting Muslim minorities as they want to Brahminize the society by creating situations where beef eating becomes a taboo for large sections of society.

Needless to say beef is amongst the cheapest sources of proteins for the poor, especially dalits and adivasis. Till just a couple of decades ago there were many communities who were preferring beef to other expensive protein rich food. At the same time the minorities, Muslims and Christians, for whom, beef is neither a taboo nor a compulsion, are being looked down on this pretext. Large propaganda campaigns are on through which minorities are being demonized around the issue of beef eating and cow slaughter. One recalls the incident of Jhajjer where 5 dalits were done to death on the suspicion of killing a cow and VHP’s Acharya Giriraj Kishore justified the event as saying that cow is so sacred for Hindus that killing of dalits does not matter. Similarly, Sheikh Rahman a cattle trader was killed in Orissa on the cooked up charge of selling cows for slaughter.

When Uma Bharati became the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister she converted her official residence into a sort of Goshala, (Cow Shed). Currently the products from cow dung and cow urine are being promoted as divine medicines to cure many ailments. Even patents have been obtained for drinks based on Cow urine. The practitioners of scientific medicine have all the doubts about efficacy of these, beyond placeboes, as no scientific study and trial of these has taken place. The procedures laid down to introduce a new drug in the market are not followed and through mushrooming chains, the cow products as medicine are proliferating in number day by day.

The ‘Cow’ seems to be the next emotive chariot which probably is being projected after the decline in the fervor for Ram Temple issue. One has no problems in respecting animals of one’s choice, but the fear is this is/will be further used as the issue to divide the communities. In our plural democratic society how can faith of section of one religious community dictate the policies of the state?

As such most of the propaganda that beef eating was brought to India by Muslims is a mere hog wash. Most of the serious researches into the sacred Hindu book, Vedas, show that Beef eating was a norm in Vedic times. Researches and studies by Mahmahopadhya Bharat Ratna Pandurang Waman Kane’s ‘Bhartiya Dharmgrantho Ka Itihas’ (History of Hindu Holy books), Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, “Did The Hindus Never Eat Beef?” in “The Untouchables Who were they and Why they became Untouchables (Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Writings and Speeches vol.l7 (Government of Maharashtra, Mumbai 1990, first edition 1948 pp 323-328) and the contemporary Historian, D.N. Jha, The Myth of Holy Cow, all point out that beef was popular food in Vedic times. Swami Viveknand emphasizes the same point in a different way. While addressing a meeting at Shakespeare club, Pasedena, Californian, USA (Feb 2, 1900) he declared, “You will be astonished if I tell you that, according to old ceremonials, he is not a good Hindu, who does not eat beef. On certain occasions he must sacrifice a bull and eat it. (Vivekanand, The Complete Works of Swami Vivekanand, Vol 3, Calcutta, Advait Ashram, 1997) Similarly the major ideologue of Hindutva, Savarkar said that there is nothing sacred about cow, it is a useful animal.

After the advent of agricultural society, rise of Jainism and Buddhism the concept of non-violence came up in different forms and later after 8th century Brahmanism projected Cow as its icon. Since then Cow is the projected as sacred, as ‘mother’ and gradually large sections of Hindus started regarding her so. In deference to the sentiments of Hindus, most Muslims Kings prohibited cow slaughter. Babur in his will to Humayun writes, “Son, this Nation Hindusthan has different Religions. Thank Allah for giving us this Kingdom. We should remove all the differences from our heart and do justice to each community according to its customs. Avoid cow-slaughter to win over the hearts of the people of this land and to incorporate the people in the matters of administration. Don’t damage the places of worship and temples, which fall in the boundaries of our rule.”

Since the rise of communal streams during freedom movement the communalists have been resorting to all the tricks to rouse emotions around matters of faith. So killing pig and putting it in the mosque & cow slaughter issue have been resorted to times and over again. It was during freedom movement itself that we see that the apostle of peace and non-violence, Mahatma Gandhi, a total vegetarian offering beef to his Muslim guest. A story goes that when one of his Muslim friends’ son from South Africa visited him in Sevagram Ashram, it happened to be the festive day of Bakr Id. Gandhi offered beef to the boy, the boy in turn refused to eat beef saying that he will not have any non vegetarian food in the Ashram as the Ashram practices non violence. What a touching sentiment on both the sides. Respect others’ practices!

Today with the rise of communalism we need to recount the examples set by Gandhi in matters pertaining to community relations and the efforts to demonize and communalize by resorting to such symbolisms of cow or Ram Temple should be put aside to focus on the issues of living in peace and harmony in a plural society.

try animal products to the minimum

if we can't stop using fur, meat, skin etc of the innocent animals then try using them to the minimum

No mutton, beef, chicken, fish and egg.

No mutton, beef, chicken, fish and egg. IF India wants to regain a position in the world as the "Knowledge Capital" it must turn 100% Vegetarian.

You are what you eat. If you eat mutton and beef (chicken+fish+egg); you become more violent. If you eat daal and green vegetables, you become cool and rational. This is not a sweeping generalisation. What you eat makes you, literally and metaphorically.

India's future as a civilisation rests on this matter. Vegetarianism. We should eat Rice and Daal or Roti with Daal with green vegetables and seasonal fruits.

There must be a complete ban on killing / slaughter / catching of any animal. Do this and see how Indian ecology improves in a short span of 50 years - but if you want a quickfix solution in 50 secs., or if you think like the Arabs and opt for French-Fry solutions., it is another matter.

Cow Slaughter

I think religious feelings of Hindus regarding cow slaughter should be respected. From the medical point of view, chicken and fish are a lot healthier than beef. Poultry industry has been developed so well in Western countries that chicken is much cheaper than beef. Such a growth of the poultry industry based on modern business principles would also result in a plentiful supply of eggs which too would become cheaper.

As an aside, let me say that countries such as the U.S., Argentina and Australia have plenty of beef to export. If arrangements can be made with a few of the exporters to use halal methods of slaughter, limited quantities of beef could be available in India although at a higher price.

TROUBLE WITH HORNS

There is a common opinion that Cow is a religious symbol of a particular religion and slaughtering it for a purpose should be banned. People who cry for the Respect for cows refuse to RESPECT THE LIFE OF HUMANS and hence they slaughter innocents in Gujarat, Maharashtra, UP etc.. etc..

And their next slogan will be BAN LEATHERS MADE OUT OF COWS. These Hippocrates who shed crocodile tears for cows should first be sent to the Gallows for depriving common man of the protein rich low cost beef and listen, a day will come when there will be no animals in India just because 3% of people who are against eating animals will compel us to eat only roti and dhal meal which will be scarce.

If slaughtering of cow and eating its meat should be banned, shouldn't the milking of a cow be banned too as we all know that the milk from the cow is not meant for us but for its calf. Lets not be brain washed by some radicals and think and respect humans more than animals.

Today they will ask us not to kill cows for food and tomorrow they will ask us to breed snakes, monkeys and rats at home as they are all respected by a certain group of people.

Subjectie

"slaughter innocents in Gujarat, Maharashtra, UP etc.. etc".

For HINDUS, COW is more sacred than MUSLIMS. So killing cow is more objectionable.

Why so much of 'special treatment' Ghulam

Why import beef that too at higher cost when you yourself talk about modern business principles? More than 30% of the cattle are non-milching, what to do with it? Just to appease a certain section of society, the burden should be on those and not the govt which is for the poeple, by the people. The overstretching by cowards make it more complicated. Will people accept that liquor and pork too be bannd/restricted? The rights of christians would be sighted by these very cowards. Similar to the ban on outfit of Kerala while our own original, divisive, criminal organisations like RSS/VHP/BD/SS/MNS operated uhindered though their complicity in all the acts of terror assigned to 'Islamic terrorists' has been proved. Why to wait for court verdicts which many times are appeasing as well. Arent we aware that the Lok Ayukta of Karnataka is a RSS man? Come on, be brave or keep shut!!

For Mr.Naqqaad

If we want others to respect our religious sensitivities, we should respect the religious sensitivities of others. There is no cowardice in doing so. Moreover you will longer if you eat chicken and fish instead of beef.

Al-Kabeer plant in A.P.

Al-Kabeer Slaughterhouse in Medak District of Andhra Pradesh is owned by a Hindu Gujarati, who, being a vegetarian HAS NO QUALMS in SLAUGHTERING COWS and EVEN EXPORTING to MIDDLE-EAST countries.

For thousands of years Brahmins slaughtered and consumed BEEF, and now this SHAM BILL: “Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill 2010” (June 2010), by POWER-ABUSE and DISILLUSIONING Indians.

Here is an authentic web-link about an UNDENIABLE FACT of my contention / comment:

Here is another article about Karnataka Beef Ban, and various comments:

http://www.twocircles.net/2010mar24/karnataka_anti_beef_law_affects_food...

Hindutva / Sangh Parivaar has "to do something controversial" to REMAIN in POWER and MEDIA GLARE. They either ABUSE POWER to DISILLUSION Indians, or they SPREAD INJUSTICE / HATRED, engaging in JHOOTHA PRACHAAR by Sangh Parivaar - just for 2% - 3% High-Caste SURVIVAL.

They (Bhajpa) CARES LESS about employment of MILLIONS, choice of FOOD or ANYTHING of that SORT. They just CARE about FILLING their COFFERS (Tijori), through Al-Kabeer's DONATIONS - as YOU KNOW with BEEF-BAN - the PRICE OF BEEF will DEFINITELY BE INCREASED, hence increased funding (Oops kick-backs) to "White-Threaded" Minority.

I wrote earlier - and WOULD NOT HESITATE to put on record, Kaangress and Bhajpaa are TWO SIDES of SAME FAKE COIN.

It is just like the Scindia Household of Gwalior, M.P. - where one family-member is in Bhajpa AND THE OTHER is in Kaangress. Remember their family are of ROYAL DESCENT - who ONCE ruled. So, WHETHER Kaangress is in Power in M.P. or New-Delhi, or Bhajpa is in Power in M.P. or New-Delhi - POWER remains IN-HOUSE, whether it is by DEMOCRATIC VOTE or BY ANCESTRAL ROYAL DESCENT!!!

An Indian

P.S.:
------
To find FACT(s) about my contention / comment, just google, type "Al-Kabeer" and you will know the fact(s). And FYI - owners wish to hide, as their BEEF EXPORT is to Middle-East Muslim Countries, so THERE IS NO mention about their names, religious, domicile affiliation(s). Even the MAIN IMPORTER / DISTRIBUTOR in Middle-East is owned by a Hindu, of Indian origin. Thank you.

Read this extracted from one blog-spot, highlighting plight / inefficiency of SPCA over "so-called" religious custodians of COW:

http://www.animalpeoplenews.org/04/5/cattleOfferings5.04.html

I can write pages and pages over this issue, but let me end by writing an AUTHENTIC foot-note. Menaka Gandhi - the NDA Minister for Environment and Animal Protection invoked COW-SLAUGHTER ban, creating TREMORS in India. Cow-carcasses were LITTERED in many TOWNS / CITIES / VILLAGES, following BAN. Each administration (Municipal, PWD, Panchayat, Tehsil, etc.) WONDERING as to who is RESPONSIBLE for clearing CARCASSES from ROADS.

Ultimately and "unceremoniously", the SHAM-BAN was LIFTED by the then Government, and it SOLVED an "ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER" in WAITING - created by Government in Power. I have no web-link, to prove this FACT - but interested readers could "google" and find something, related to this UNDENIABLE FACT.

It is JUST LIKE THE INDIAN MILITARY TRAINING EXERCISE - where one Military GROUP (or contingent) is ENGAGED in DIGGING TUNNEL(s) as part of their "training exercise"; and another Military GROUP (or contingent) is ENGAGED IN FILLING the DUG-TUNNEL. One "contingent" DOES NOT KNOW what the other GROUP DID - keeping BOTH GROUPS busy, fulfilling Military TRAINING EXERCISE.

Ganga Maiya is angry for being ignored
